Our mission
- To create inclusive, accessible and safe spaces to enjoy football
- To organise events and activities that celebrate and bring people together through football
- To increase visibility of fans like us in order to encourage others to experience the joy of football for the first time
our storyNutmegs was set up in 2018 by Hayley Bennett and Ammarah Pandor who wanted to create better football experiences for others like them. Nutmegs was born through simply wanting to find somewhere they both felt comfortable enjoying football.
Nutmegs came about from the fact that we have had challenges around feeling included as football fans and players. The social side of watching football was not designed for people of colour from marginalised genders in mind so we basically realised we would need to create our own spaces. “Diversity” work in football seems to centre around encouraging fans like us to fit into the culture or prove that they too can be football fans. We want people to come and be part of something and just be unapologetically who they are! Our original goal was to find venues to meet up and screen live football in inclusive venues. It seems so simple but we could not find a single place that didn’t revolve around alcohol, or that was fully accessible. We are still looking! Licenses for venues to show football are for pubs by default. This made screenings almost impossible so we have been working with football clubs and organisations to arrange tickets for groups of us to go to live games. We have had people join to watch football for the first time and others come who don’t have any friends to watch football with. Being in a collective makes people feel safer and more included. |
